Darkening a grey?

When I started working with my mare when she was two, she was a dark steel grey with gorgeous dapples, and a jet black mane and tail. She's now 6, and when I kept her at our previous barn, I had no control of when she went out, so she was usually out during the day, which bleached her. When she's clean, her coat is now very close to white with flea-bitten spots, and an almost black mane and tale. I really liked her dapples, and I have now moved barns and am keeping her in during the day and out at night to hopefully slow down the sun bleaching. Is there anything I can do to darken her coat up again? Or is this just a natural process she is going to go through? She has black skin and was born black, then faded to chestnut then turned grey.

Grey's will turn white no matter what you do, some do it faster than others. Hard to keep clean, but stunning when they are cleaned up for sure!

It's a natural process. I doubt the sun had much to do with her rate of lightening.

She's grey, there's no way to darken her back down. The sun didn't do it, her genetics did.

Yep, like others said, it's all just part of owning a gray horse. They all get whiter every year, regardless of how much sun they get. Some of them turn white quickly (over the span of just a couple of year) and other take longer (I've seen grays in their 20's that were still in that gorgeous dark dappled stage), but they all change every year.

Same things happening to my mare :( the way the woman I asked answered me was this "Grays are born black and die white, there's nothing you can do about it" she was very blunt :P

She's only partly right though. Not all grays are born black. My gray was born buckskin. Grays come in any color before they actually turn gray.
