Just an ordinary chestnut?

I always just assumed that my horse, being a TB, was just a normal chestnut, but having done some reading and heard some things around the forum, i was wondering if he might be a sabino, or some such. But i don't know...
He fits some of the criteria but not all of it. So.... opinions?

^^ The flash washed alot of them out, but he has a lot of white hairs flecked through his coat.

His white markings don't have a defined edge, but blend into the rest of his coat.

He has a lot of white hairs on his hinds, above his socks.

BUT... sabino's typically have stockings, not socks, large face markings like a wide blaze or a bald face, and usually splashes of white on their belly, right?
So what does everyone think? It doesn't matter to me either way, I love him to bits, it's just something I'm curious about.

Oh, another thing i noticed was that the skin beneath his white stripe is grey, it's only pink in a couple of spots.

I'm currently inclined to think he's just a plain old chestnut, but just thought I'd put it out there. :)

Although he seems to have a little roaning in him, I think he is a chestnut. I find it odd, though, that as a TB, he is branded - looks like a freeze brand on his LF shoulder.

iride - race horses in australia are generally branded on both shoulders. the near side is usually their stud brand and the offside their year of birth. i dont know if its the same in the u.s. though. freeze brands are most popular these days ;)

redhawk - looks like plain old chestnut to me :) how old is he? im finding as my standie gets older that his markings are less defined and he is getting white speckling through his coat

Thanks Emily, I wasn't aware of TB branding in Australia. In the US TB race horses are tattooed on the inside of their upper lip.

iRide, he is freeze-branded on both shoulders, on the left is his breeders and on the right is his birth year (2001) and what no. foal he was that year.
Jazzy he is 7. I'm curious to see if the speckling becomes more pronounced as he gets older. :)

no worries :) i think tattooing hasnt reached its peak of popularity here yet. in fact i dont think its really done at all here yet. but as with everything else im sure we will copy the u.s. soon enough lmao

redhawk - it is a strange one but i would still say chestnut. it will be interesting to see what happens as he ages

The Sabino gene shows itself in various ways. It looks to me like he may be a minimal sabino.

A lot of chestnuts have some white hair in them. I think all 3 chestnuts I owned also had it. Definitely a chestnut.
