Vet &test results but no answers-help
This is in f/u to my post regarding my Gelding with possible UTI. Symptoms of dripping from penis (extended but not erect) while eating hay and 2 observations of pee with very brown at end of stream. The Vet came out yesterday and did blood work, cath and rectal exam. Nothing found on exam and he did not have a temp. She called today to say that urine & bloodwork came back fine. The culture wont be back for a week but the Vet says she does not expect any bacteria to grow based on the other information. $400 and no answers. The only suggestion is to video the dripping and try to get a sample.
Does anyone have any ideas or similar situation?
Wow, I would of thought she would of found something......did she suggest maybe doing an ultrasound or scope?
This might be too simple, but has he had his sheath cleaned and the bean removed lately?
What they found with my guy is that instead of a bladder that's like a clear sac, his is filled with a jelly like substance. We tried to get a sample of the substance but couldn't, apparently you can't bio-op the bladder. My vet conferred with the vets at Pullman and no one had seen anything like this. So, $3000 later and I too had no answers.
One of my friends had a similar prob with one of their horses. The vets diagnoses was paralyzed bladder either brought on by a spinal injury or a fast growing tumor. He was having trouble with his balance and walking too though. Are there any other symptoms? I'll talk to my vet tech friend.
Can he move his tail? This totally reminds me of one of the horses we had at my camp this summer. He couldn't stop peeing, he was always dribbling something, and he couldn't move his tail after a while as well. We had to put him down towards the end of the summer because he started falling down and we were worried it might happen with a kid on him. He was really old but it made me super mad that we couldn't spend the money to make him more comfy but whatever. Anyway, I hope you figure out what's going on and it's fixable!
When was he last vaccinated? What vaccinations did he get? How long after vaccination did symptoms occur? Any change in other areas of the body like toe-dragging, lethargy, carrying the head/neck funny, change in gait?
Zip was vaccinated (everything and teeth floated) end of Dec. We bought him in Nov and seller said he was due in Feb but Vet said okay to get him on our schedule. I only noticed the symptoms a couple of weeks ago but not sure how long its been going on. Since he is the low man he does not get "relaxed" much until He is stalled to eat. I feed am when its still dark, let them out on my way to work, & they come up from pasture at 5pm for feed then again at 8:30pm dark again.
No changes in him or his gait. His tail is also working.
When the Vet came out Wed the first thing she did was clean his sheath but said no problems there. She was happy cath went in easy. 2nd sample of urine had mucus but she said not unusual. She did rectal and felt bladder( i guess the outside) nothing unusual. She has not recommended any add testing and suggested that I try to video the dripping and try to get sample of the fluid, she says it could possibly be pre-ejac fluid vs urine. Okay but my friend did see him pee 2 different times on trail ride and at the end very dark brown. I asked if maybe he passed a stone. Vet said not likely as he was to young and no indication of stones in the urine sample testing.
I know I should be relieved but it just does not seem right to me. Plus he was quite thin when he came and I dont see where he has gained much, if any weight. Seller says he was thin for the whole time ( 1.5 yrs) he had him.
*G & K"s Mom - how is your fellow doing? I am so sorry he has a problem. Does he have a dripping or urinating problem?
Find a better vet or a university that has a good vet program. They will solve the issue.
If it were me I would be getting another opinion. I would also have my collection jar at the ready to try and get some of the dark urine or dribble.
Something isn't right.........Did she take blood for a panel?
George hasn't had an issue for several years. His bladder will always be filled with this jelly like substance but he has never peed blood again.
