Standardbreds

What do you think of standardbreds?

I am training one for a friend, and thinking of getting one for myself. This particular one is 15 hands at 3 years old. How fast do they grow? As fast as thoroughbreds? How are their feet? All the TBs I have known have bad feet. What do you think?

I looked at a standardbred before I got my TB. She was really small though (14.3), she looked fine boned so I passed on her.

I have two stdbds now. I have had two others in the past. They have all been wonderful horses. Very nice temperament and easy to care for. They all had/have great feet (after I pulled the track shoes and got their feet back to normal). Stdbds are fully grown at about 6 yrs old from what I've been told. My smallest is 14.2+ (every 1/4" counts when they're that small :) ) and the largest is 17.3.

most have great feet the amish use them for their buggies, most free rescued horses, werent fast enough to race.

My personal experience with standardbred feet, is great.
My horse goes barefoot. He's only ever worn shoes when racing. He has BIG feet. I think this is very valuable as his weight spreads well and definitely is healthy. He's never had a foot problem before since he's been with me. My horse is almost 13 and he is 16.3. His size is lovely because although he was tall, he is narrow, allowing for a long leg. (not great for bareback tho OUCH)
His confirmation overall is fabulous. Thick legged and well proportionate. Unlike some standardbreds, his back is not long at all, its in fact relatively short. This is a personal trait though, not a breed trait.
I'm retraining my horse, and already he's cantering and jumping, bending nicely, and doing some basic dressage. ITs great
I plan to be working with standardbreds as my breed of chocie for a life time

I love Standardbreds. I grew up around them (Tracks) and they have the best temperment. They usually have pretty good feet from what I have seen.
The smallest one we had was 15hh.
I have never re-trained a STB but I have always thought they are really smart and eager to learn as a whole. But you may want to get someone who has done it before to teach them to canter.

They're great horses.
