Why are my other cats being mean?

I have 5 female cats and just had 2 of them altered. Now that I've brought them back home my other cats are hissing and growling at them. I was thinking maybe the smells they have on them from being around all the other animals, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?

You changed up the cat herd dynamics (much like a horse herd).

When two left, the other three figured out who was alpha.

Now those two are back, and they all have to figure it out again.

They will settle down, don't worry.

I agree with Red Gate and yourself. I think it is a combination of strange (hospital) scent firstly followed with a brief absence of the other two. So for the remaining three, in their minds, these might possibly be two new cats and therefore, to be cautious and safe, need to be dealt with accordingly.

Its related to the weird hospital smell...

Things will calm down in a few days.

I'm keeping them separated until tomorrow so the 2 that were altered can relax and de-stress. I don't want them running around and hurting themselves =(

we usually lock the cut up ones away overnight and let them out the next day with the rest. the hospital smelling cats slink around a day or so, bit seem fine.

Cats are evil. why are you surprised they're being...well, catty? :D

Hahaha they are evil  its just weird to me that they were gone for ONE day and it's like they have no idea who they are now. It's hard for me to understand that lol things are a bit calmer now. It's only one cat who is having issues now. The other 2 cats are back to normal. So would it mean that the cat who is still hissing and growling is the pack leader? It was so funny last night the cat that still has an issue was sitting at one end of my apartment and the 2 that were altered were sitting at the other end together just staring each other down.
