Why are my other cats being mean?
I have 5 female cats and just had 2 of them altered. Now that I've brought them back home my other cats are hissing and growling at them. I was thinking maybe the smells they have on them from being around all the other animals, but I'm not sure. Any ideas?
You changed up the cat herd dynamics (much like a horse herd).
When two left, the other three figured out who was alpha.
Now those two are back, and they all have to figure it out again.
They will settle down, don't worry.
I agree with Red Gate and yourself. I think it is a combination of strange (hospital) scent firstly followed with a brief absence of the other two. So for the remaining three, in their minds, these might possibly be two new cats and therefore, to be cautious and safe, need to be dealt with accordingly.
Its related to the weird hospital smell...
Things will calm down in a few days.

I'm keeping them separated until tomorrow so the 2 that were altered can relax and de-stress. I don't want them running around and hurting themselves =(
Cats are evil. why are you surprised they're being...well, catty? :D
