Problem with lunging my green horse
Long story short, my draft horse, Norman, was trained with Parelli for a while. They didn't lunge at the barn he was at, but she trained him to run around in circles and stop when she looked at him.
No offense to Parelli people, but I think it's just goofy. I've been lunging him now, but every so often he'll stop, turn, and just stare at me. It's usually when I give a verbal aid or point the whip at him. It's a real ordeal to get him going again because he just stands there. It's annoying and lunging ends up being pretty unproductive. I know it's because he was trained to do that Parelli thing.
So, how do I get him to stop turning in? No matter what I do, he doesn't move a muscle. It's like trying to move a brick wall. :-x
LOL, I can picture it perfectly in my head!!!!
You might have to give over to his way of thinking......... Your body language is most likely telling him to stop, you need to talk his language, which in "Parelli speak" would be to drive him out by redirecting his nose out onto the circle again and then leave him alone. Put your whip by your side and just stand there until you want him to stop.
JMO, but lunging a trained horse is pretty boring for the horse. While it is a training aid, it should be kept to a minimum for the sake of the horse's mental state.
