Keep Raising Taxes!!

Alright this just pisses me off. I'm broke, everyone I know is broke. Nobodies spending any money. The government is all aflutter about how bad the economy is and how nobody has any money and how we need to get the American people to spend more money.....so what do they do?????

Raise taxes, change taxes, find new things to tax us for... Check the links out. Basically they are going to try to move from a gas tax to a mileage tax. Right now we are paying almost $.50/gallon to the various govn't agencies to keep our roads good. Ok understandable. But I wonder why that money keeps going to non-road projects???

Anyways, if you agree with me that this is ridiculous and yet another way for the govn't to take more money that I don't have email/call your senators. If you think its a great idea email/call your senators.

For me this would mean at minimum an extra $1600/year. I make less than $10k a year now (student). Besides that we have the added benefit of the brandnew GPS tracker being installed in your car... I really don't think they have any business knowing where I'm going and have been.

Alright off the soapbox (sorry I'm so mad I could spit). Here are the links. Oh and its not just MN. 11 other states are looking into this as well as the feds... and they want to charge more for heavier vehicles for all of those who haul.

MPR: Transportation chief considers mileage tax to replace gas tax

MPR: Pawlenty wants Minnesota to test mileage tax

I really don't think a mileage tax will fly for several reasons but most importantly I think that there are too many who would stand up and say "enough is enough" I do however think they may test it, as far as gps tracking people where they go etc...can we say "socialism?"
Anyhow where I work now we have stables, haven't been used in years but....it's close enough I can park my truck and ride to work lol...tax that!

farmpony84 03-20-2009 05:17 PM

hmmm... I geuss we can't dump the gas in the river....that would make PETA mad....

hotreddun 03-30-2009 02:54 PM

They already have GPS tracking some of us...OnStar. I don't think it would be a total waste to tax heavier vehicles (DONT HIT ME!) Europe and Japan have similar programs and they work. True it would be a pain for us heavy horse haulers, but one it could weed out the people who don't need horses (and we all know we know some people like that) and two it would weed out these soccer moms with one kid and an expedition. I mean really why do some of these people who dont even own land have big Dodge's and Hummers and stuff. Sorry thats my rant to your rant. I'll probably be bashed but I won't reply as Im not looking for a fight. :)

on the other hand...that mileage tax is pretty stupid. That just wouldn't work with our road infrastructure. We built our towns to be spatially big and distant. That sort of thing could maybe work in like New York but certainly not in the midwest or south.

HotRedDun: I see your points :-) and I won't bash you. I prefer actual discussion not worthless yelling, lol :-). But, I guess I would like to see our government use money wisely first before they start trying to figure out new ways to get more money from us. Its not an absolutely terrible idea in and of itself (besides the GPS unit forced into my car by the govn't)... but for us Midwesterns or Westerns for that matter this makes country living much more expensive. Or what about the people whose jobs depend on long drives? They have to start charging more or go out of business... which could be good/bad I guess depending on who you talk to...

I guess its an interesting conversation :-) and there is good/bad in it just like anything else. Anyways I appreciate your input all the same :-)

I don't think knowing where everyone is is one of the defining characteristics of socialism :P

I think taxing fuel is better than a mileage tax, as it also penalises gas-guzzlers more heavily. In the UK, we pay over 50p/L in tax (current prices are around 90p/L for petrol and 1/L for diesel), which is 1.90/US gal or $2.73/US gal. Then there's VAT (currently 15%), and the fuel duty has VAT charged on it too.

I agree with mostly what hotredrun said. I live in Montana though, and I think it would be a pain. I do see the benefit of taxing heavier vehicles though (Even though it sucks). I really don't care about the GPS thing as that's more the media's idea of Socialism vs real socialism. Besides, if my car gets stolen or something at least they can find it. I don't care if they know where I am or not.

My question though is how does the OP suggest we stimulate the economy. We all have things we DONT like, but it's hard to come up with something that works and keeps people happy.

MN Tigerstripes 03-31-2009 08:28 PM

Off the top of my head? Lower taxes on everyone, cut govern't programs, and if we're going to fund a HUGE government stimulus package use it to create REAL jobs... or better yet how about split the stimulus package into a sizeable refund (not that piddly Bush refund) for citizens? I think that if we all got a big chunk of change it would stimulate the economy & create jobs (as spending money creates jobs as they need more people to produce more product).

Of course, there are problems with this too as with everything else.

Spastic_Dove 03-31-2009 08:37 PM

Which government programs though?
You mean like welfare or what?
(Not trying to start anything. I've been wondering this myself)
