WANTED: Aussie saddle PAD
Looking to buy an Aussie saddle pad.
I just purchased a Kimberly Downunder aussie saddle and would like to get a pad.
Just as a tip, an English pad will work just as well and be WAY less expensive :) I use english with my Aussie
cool! Thanks for telling me. I was wondering about that :D
I am such a western girl that this whole Aussie stuff is going to take a bit of getting used to :)
So just any old English pad? Or are there certain sizes?
Here is my favorite Aussie pad, made of New Zealand wool:

I've also used the cheap western acrylic/wool blends with a Wintec foam pad:
I'm not saying you should follow my example, but it provides food for thought. The flaps of the Australian saddle hang down below the level of the blanket, but I've never seen any irritation to her skin.
I do have an Australian pad I bought from DownUnder years ago. It currently pulls duty as a pad on my saddle stand....
Any will do. Here's Clem and hers, though it's a little bit small, it works great. As long as your Aussie has the flocked panel things under it and not Western fleece any pad that would work for English should work for Aussie :)
Australian Stock Saddles are built somewhat like English saddles (if they are the traditional kind) with wool (or other material) filled panels. These provide all the padding you need, unlike the western saddles, where you have to use thick saddle pads to cushion the tree.
So really what you're looking for is a saddle pad that keeps your saddle clean, and the horse dry and cool. For this wool or at least wool lined is often a really good option. Alternatively, you can use a standard english pad. Normally dressage pads are good (they have straight fronts rather than curved ones) and you might need it in an extra large size to accommodate the saddle.
I agree with the English pad! If you really want the western look, you can use the thin wool blanket style instead. The English pad works better for my mare though- the pad doesn't move, and it has the fold at the shoulder which helps it to sit, I think. I have the Roma Ecole, recommended by Wallaby on this forum, I think it was.
I thought it was too cool when I finally got around to watching Man From Snowy River (everyone compares my horse to the movie)- but they just used a thin towel like blanket. Makes me wanna find a really neat patterned thin wool blanket and chop it down for multiple pads! :)
A dressage pad will provide the most coverage for the purpose of keeping the saddle clean- they tend to be longer both along the spine and down the sides. Depending on your Aussie saddle, the flaps may still be longer than the dressage pad, though.
I use a thin wool pad with a diamond wool pad underneath. My dressage saddle pad was actually too small & didn't go down as far as the flaps, but they do come in different lengths.
