Slowing down at the Lope? Help Please.
Yo, hey there, everyone. I have a 3 year old quarter paint cross who I will be entering in his first western pleasure show. I have been working on leads these past 3 weeks and on slowing down his lope. I have trot, lope, trot and a couple of other things. He is not chargey, just is happier with a little faster lope. He is learning his leads well.
Question: What do you find works best for slowing them down in the lope?
Use a snaffle and seesaw it when he slows down stop, a big part is your seat, move your body like he is at a slower lope and he will match up his body with yours if you move like you are going fast he will move faster move like your going slow he will slow down, as he get older he will change his speeds faster, I have a 4 year old and he has 20 over different speeds now, I can open him up and run cows and then show him in a pleasure show. Every horse has a speed that they are good at and just looks right don't slow him do to much and make him look dumb, I have seen some that look like they are dead and seen some good judges not place them in the top 10.
