Learning to carry himself

I love the feeling I get when I'm riding my horse (9 year old QH) and he starts carrying himself; I feel higher up, like he pushes me up, and he's moving easier yet more powerfully. I don't get that really good movement that often though. Will it just be a matter of time until he learns to move like this consistently? Just more riding and strength building? (He's in training for hunter under saddle)

Yes, it takes time to build those muscles up that are needed for him to carry himself properly for an extended period of time. Its the same as an athlete needs to train for strength training, it takes time. It also takes consistency on your part to get him there. Over time those moments will get longer and less time in between.

I know how you feel. I have been swapping between my horse (a 15h arabian who is only learning how to carry himself) and a big warmblood mare who is wonderfully forward and strong through the back. I love that feeling of self-carriage! It just takes time and lots of work over the topline (intermittently ask your horse to stretch out and downward over his topline in the walk, trot and canter) to build that in a horse.
