So, I've been riding for nearly 2 months now, everythings been going great, and the horse has done so much for me bless her. But there's one slight problem - I cant dismount from her that well. I ride english, but somehow I cant manage to bring my right leg over the saddle when I dismount. I've got no idea why I cant do it, but its come to the point where someone (my instructor/mum etc) has to pull my right leg round to get me off. Any ideas about how I could dismount easier or why I'm not being very successful in dismounting? Here's some pictures of us last week.. (excuse my bad riding facial expressions lol!)
My Perch is 18 hands and I have a hell of a time dismounting. I have to dismount onto a 55 gallon drum. It's a super long drop trying to do so without it. So I understand your dilemma and not sure there's an easy way to deal with it.
How big is your horse?
Stretch and muscle strength--if your muscles are tight from riding, you're going to have a heck of a time moving your legs!
And oh my GOSH she's pretty!!!!
she's just under 16.2hh. and unfortunately shes not mine :( shes the riding schools horse. wish she was mine though :( i'm doing a course thing with her soon too! thankyou, she is rather gorgeous :)
Congratulations on your new hobby!! Looking good. If you are having trouble swinging your leg over the saddle, then you need to break down the steps for what you need to be able to do. You need to be able to stand up in your left stirrup to lift yourself out of the saddle first of all so maybe you could start practicing that, just putting weight into the left stirrup and trying to stand on that leg. Once you've got that down, practice leaning forward a little and standing, then start practicing lifting up the right leg. You could practice on the ground too until you are strong enough to lift your right leg high enough to clear the saddle. When you are mounting, think of what you are doing because dismounting is the reverse. If you can lift your right leg high enough to get on, then it's just the reverse. Goodluck to you!
I've been riding for years and I still have a problem dismounting if I think about it too hard. Haha. If I just swing my leg over I'm fine but if I think about dismounting then I get all mixed up and end up doing some sort of weird vault thing off of the horse. I don't know if you might have that same issue but just try swinging off one time and see what happens. =)
Glad I'm not the only person who has trouble. I don't know if I'm doing it right but I just put both hands on the front of the saddle to balance and help push my leg up and over while I somewhat stand in the left. It doesn't seem to bother my horse that I do it that way and it helps me be able to lift up and over.
