Foal and training
At what age can I start teaching a foal the basics of Parelli method?
The very basic level one stuff I think you can start on at any time. The main thing with little ones is to keep lessons short, no more than 10-15 minutes. Getting them to give to pressure (which I believe parelli level 1 is basically) you can start at any time.
Once you have them used to you and getting touched all over I say go for it.
Just remember it can be overdone. I believe a foal should be learning about her world and just being a horse for the first year or so. But you do want to have some control over them, and get them desensitized to scary things which will make the later training easier.
Sorry to double post doc, but I wanted to give you a pointer
When our babies are around 3 months old we put on a web halter with a lead rope attached that is about 5-6 foot long. Long enough to reach the back feet at least. Let them walk around with that rope on every day for a few weeks. Its unbelievable what that little thing teaches.
They will learn to give their head to pressure, not freak out when their tied and to figure out how to get themselves out of a situation.
Some may think that is cruel but do it anyway. I've seen people put the rope on and just leave it for weeks without taking it off. I'm home all day so I would take it off at night and go check on them several times a day. I only do this when they are in a small containment area, not when they are out in the big pasture.
Hint: use an old rope because by the time its done the rope will be trashed.
Thank you for the helpful hints 8)
I will follow and keep you updated on any progress.
BTW - I had our first ride yesterday. Jade (the mom) was adorable and Rubi (the little one) jumped and ran all over. It was a very enjoyable time.
Bye and thanks again
Yep, I'd start right away! I know Pat himself does not put a halter on the baby for a long time. He teaches them how to give to pressure in a lot of other ways. Did you ever see the series on Smart Seven? Pat produced Savvy Club DVDs on Seven's progress in learning from the very very beginning. It's was very inspirational.
I saw his level 1 series. I can not recall his attitude toward very young foals...
we put halters on our foals when when they are about 3 mounths old, because to wean them we tie them to the fence everyday for 2 hours and everyday put them farther apart and the last day we put them in separate stalls.
