I got to play cop yesterday
Okay, so I have some time off and I have been needing to come home and ride. Anyway, I get here about 3 am yesterday morning. My dad is already awake so we are standing in the kitchen visiting when the sheriff's office calls. They got a 911 call about a guy walking down the road just east of town so we get in his car and head that way. I was thinking a couple of miles, if that. WRONG. Home is only about 1 mile from the Oklahoma line so we go into Oklahoma and drive along the highway looking for this guy. We get about 6 miles out of town and when we top a hill, all of a sudden, there he is. Dad stops and turns around and by the time we get back to where he was, the guy has run off. So, Dad calls the deputy out of the nearest town in OK because he was kinda out of his jurisdiction. She gets out and on her way to meet us, she finds an abandoned vehicle. She runs the tags on the car and it comes back stolen out of another county in OK. So, now we know why the guy ran. They call out other officers and a tracking dog to see if we can find the guy. We are sweeping country roads and waking people up telling them to take the keys out of their cars (around here, everyone leaves their keys in the ignition). So, we decide to head toward Higgins just to see if he showed back up on the road. Sure enough, we were going down a hill and there he was only about a mile from town. He rabbits again so Dad calls on the radio and gets all the other cops to where we were. It was still completely dark so we are searching the fields with spotlights and the dog showed up and hit on his trail immediately. They started crossing a field and stirred up a herd of deer and the dog lost the trail. :( So, we start searching the roads again and watching for any movement. It had just turned gray in the east and you could just barely see well enough to notice movement in the pastures, when we saw him walking in the middle of a pasture toward town. All units converged on him and the foot race begins. He zigs toward the railroad tracks (that I was watching) and when he sees me, he runs the other way, where he runs into another cop. He just keeps running back and forth and there are not enough of us to completely surround him. So we chase and chase. He got across the highway closer to town so Dad told me to get the car and head him off. :) I'm telling you, this guy didn't even qualify as being half an idiot. So we get him surrounded and one cop has a gun pointed at him and another has a taser pointed at him and he still wouldn't get on the ground. Dad, (who is almost 60 years old) is getting a little mad at this point so he gives him one more order to get on the ground and the guy started to walk toward him. Dad tackled the guy right there in a big mudhole and the wrestling match ensued. By the end of it, the guy had a mouthfull of mud and cow poo and was screaming like a girl. So we got our guy and I got to play cop for the morning. By the time we got home from the whole thing, it was nearly 10:00 that morning. It was funny cause that kid was 28 years old and got beat up by and "old man". LOL. He came up looking like a mud monster cause Dad dropped him on his face in the mud puddle. It was so exhilerating and exhausting at the same time. It feels really good to get your guy. And it turns out that he is a convicted felon with a rap sheet about 7 pages long of nothing but aggravated assault and assault on a peace officer. Glad I had my gun with me when I was 30 feet away from this idiot. :) Anyway, I just wanted to share with someone cause I felt special and it was so much fun tracking that guy.

Lordy! You go girl! That rocks. Sounds REALLY thrilling and...not fun, but...something close. Dumb boy, why would you do that when you have a gun and a tazer pointed at you? Sheesh. Glad you got the guy, though! Woo!

I am glad not one was hurt and that bad guy was put in jail.

My prayers are with the families and friends of the fallen officers.

I'm surprised your dad let you help out with this one. Could have turned out a lot differently:?

Yay!!!! Another one bites the dust!

Are people really that dumb to think they could escape from that many people on the hunt for them?

smrobs 04-05-2009 12:17 PM

Well, CDT, we didn't know who he was until after we caught him and I have been going on patrol with dad since I was about 12. Plus, I work with convicted felons for a living and I did have my gun with me just in case. Yes, it could have ended a lot differently but I was never very far from a cop.

Wow, RC. I always hate to hear something like that. I feel for thier families and will keep them in my prayers.

I thought for sure it was a prisoner that had escaped. I think I heard there was one in Oklahoma on the run. We live about 4 miles from a state pre-release prison. Before they put a fence up they had guys walking away about once a month. We had to quit leaving the keys in the cars :-( Or at least hiding them better.
Good job on getting your man cowgirl! You told the story very well too :D
