Wool Felt Saddle Pads
I am very partial to felt pads. They seem to do a much better job of what a saddle pad is supposed to do. Plus, they don't fall apart as easy and do a better job of cooling the horse (in my opinion).
I just started lessons at a new barn, and my instructor has me using what I believe to be a 3/4 inch felt western pad.
I was looking through a catalog today looking for one to go with the new saddle I am hoping to purchase soon and have decided that they should definately come in more colors than just...grey.
Also, opinions on felt pads? Thanks. =)
I agree on felt is great stuff. Good luck finding it in many colors though.
I did a bunch of research awhile back trying to find out the differences between the types. Needled felt vs pressed etc.
I found 5 Star Equine Products made the best felt saddle pads Saddle Pads & Saddle Blankets by 5 Star: Official Site I even contacted some manufacturers to check if it would be cheaper to make my own (it wouldn't). They are expensive but you can find them on sale or on Ebay occasionally
The nice thing about 3/4" or 1/2" felt pads is that you can use a pretty blanket over the top ;-).
If you want to go all out, for superior shock absorption and non-slip, then check out ThinLine's Pro-Tech felt pad. It has 1/2" top grade felt plus 1/4" ThinLine material sewn along the top. I LOVE using my ThinLine Half Pad over a wool felt pad. It's a great combination for horse AND rider comfort. You can use the Half Pad over a doubled wool blanket too.
