Blackstone Clydesdales

Well, today I went over to Cumnock, in East Ayrshire, to get up on a big hairy monster horse for my first big ride since before I had my operation!

I went over to Blackstone Clydesdales, as I'd decided to book a ride there while I was off on holiday for a week. Once my satnav got me most of the way there, I went in and had a cup of coffee before going off to meet my noble steed for the afternoon!

He was called Alfie, he was an 18hh (although I was convinced he was bigger!) six-year-old gelding who also gets used to pull a cart with another gelding called Randolf.

Here's Alfie before getting tacked up:

John and Maggi, who run Blackstone Clydesdales, tailor the experience to YOU personally, so even if you've never sat on a horse before, they'll make sure that you enjoy a nice quiet ride on a suitable horse for the afternoon.

Bearing in mind my "little" injury, I was put up on Alfie, who I was told was very quiet and sensible. I knew Alfie would be a good sort straight away, as once I was aboard he didn't fidget, he didn't muck about, and when I took him into the small field at the bottom of the yard to give him a wee try, he went pretty well from using a little leg and a little clucking. John described him as "the kind of horse who'll happily plod along, but will step up a gear when you ask him". Perfect!

Here we are, in the yard, just before heading out, with John on his big Percheron gelding (whose name I've completely forgotten!)

So, off we went, around the village of Lugar and Cumnock.  We went through the park, where one of the staff met us to take photos (these will be up soon!), before we disappeared into the woods. We even met up with a woman there, walking her dogs, who'd been given a ride voucher for a birthday present!

On the way out:

Not a great pic, but here's some of the countryside we saw on the way round:

I even ended up leading us home!

Being welcomed home!

Hairy monsters! But which one did I take home??

So, there you have it! A nice wee quiet ride out this afternoon! They even give you a wee certificate at the end, and the fact that quite a few people have been, or are going, back means they must be doing something right! :)

Hey - Good for you.
You couldn't find a taller horse then!!!!
They are lovely,
Countryside is lovely
Be nice to get pics as you progress - is this going to be a long term thing?

DarenC1 08-14-2013 08:02 PM

Well, like I say, I think Alfie was actually TALLER than what John said. I know John will know his horses inside-out and back to front, but I had an 18hh Clydie for a share horse last year, and I'm sure Alfie was bigger!

Anyway, I digress...

It won't be a long-term thing, no, as the yard is about a 90min drive away. I found their website by accident one night, and decided I had to check the place out. As I have a week off work this week, I thought I would go over and give it a try!

Shame its so far away as it looks lovely and a great horse
Are you intending to do some regular riding somewhere? You look like you really enjoy it

That sounds like you and Alfie had loads of fun! Those beasts are gorgeous. It's a good thing that place is way across the ocean or I'd be gathering any extra coins and dollars I could find to find a way to bring one of them home.

:-)

I'm hoping to get back into my riding again, as I've had a couple of months off due to my shoulder injury, but I'm kinda limited by the shifts that I work.

A friend of mine has offered me a share of her gorgeous little Fell pony, whom I've ridden lots of times before, but again the problem is my shift pattern! :-(

A friend of mine has a couple of Clydes that I sometimes go to ride when I have a day off, so I've managed to get my big horse "fix" easily in the past! Having said that, though, I'll certainly be going back to Blackstone at some point in the near future!

Well, you're not having Alfie, because I want him!

Been a while since I've had a photo like this:

You need to buy yourself a horse Daren, you look such a natural up there for someone who hasn't done that much riding and had that nasty fall too

DarenC1 08-22-2013 12:18 PM

Aww, thanks. :-)

I would love to take on another horse at the time, but I dunno if I would manage it due to my shifts at work. A friend of mine has offered to let me share her Fell pony, but I don't know how well it would work. :-(
