First reining show - tips, tricks, advice?
I have my first reining show this weekend in Green As Grass classes and I was looking for some advice and/or tips & tricks! The mare I'm showing is 9 years old, has been shown before, gorgeous stops and spins, about 14hh, but she's a powerhouse!! Since it's Green as Grass, I'm permitted to show with 2 hands, which is what I'll be doing. I first started reining in March and have been learning on a schoolmaster stallion, whom I wish I could show but unfortunately cannot since I am underage. My two patterns are NRHA #8 and #6, both of which are thankfully easy!

To all of you who are old pros at showing reiners, feel free to fire away all the advice you can offer!

Make sure you don't stop too soon. Go PAST your markers. It is harder than it sounds for those of us who are green.....but we tend to get anxious. The other issue I have had is being patient. WAIT for your horse and take your time after stops and spins especially before moving to your next manuever.

Most of all-HAVE FUN! And let us know how it goes!

Wait, pause, breath and keep your eyes between your horses ears. Don't panic when you put the rein on the neck for the spin and there's a pause of two seconds from your horse, wait and let him flow:wink:

Ps. I'm not an old pro I'm entering my green as grass this October!!! I've practiced more than I've slept!!!

It went great!! I was super nervous beforehand but after we got in there I was fine. Our first run was great!! She came back for me beautifully in the small circles, waited on me in the rundowns, and stopped on a dime. We got a score of 66, with a half point penalty for a slight over-spin, and a 2-point penalty for asking for the lead change slightly too late. We got 4th out of 9 runs though!

We had a really good run the second day too, but in her first lead change, she switched in her front end but not her hind end which I didn't fully realize, so that took 6 penalty points off D: so we got a score of 62 and a half. Could have been worse though, my trainer did a few runs on her and she would have had a 70 if she hadn't done 5 slims!!

Overall it went great and it was a lot of fun. I'm really excited to step up next year!!

Sounds like a good show all around, well done. Now where are some pics?
