Is my saddle hurting my horse?
I think that my saddle is hurting my horse - she was only 4 when I bought it 2 years ago and she has definatly grown since then. I have an HDR advantage synthetic all purpose, and it has a fairly deep seat. This is what it looks like just to show you the seat -
My horse has a pretty low wither and wide back for her size, and I think that my saddle may be pinching a bit. When I was tightening my girth the other day, she pinned her ears which she has never done before. She has also been more dificult to mount lately, and this year she seemed more sensitive on her back when I mounted her bareback (she used to let me run and jump, last time I tried she pinned her ears and started walking away). I also noticed that when I am jumping, it rocks forward and comes off her back. Excuse my huge butt in this picture, I just wanted to show you what it's doing
Do you think it's time for a new saddle? Or are there products or things I can do to make it fit better? Or am I just unbalanced?
Hmm, someone please correct me if I'm wrong on this haha.
I think to stop it from 'rocking' forward you could try putting a sheepskin pad underneath, or even maybe just one of those hard foam ones could work?
As for her being more sensitive, you could try the pad (if thats even a good idea haha) and use a mounting block for awhile.
I'd also considering having the vet out to do a little check over, it could just be a pain issue in general as well.
Also, I was going to ask if you noticed any white hairs around where your saddle actually sits, I know that the white hairs are sometimes a sign of pinching, then I noticed the colour of your horse. I don't know how easily you could tell. I'm also not sure on how quickly these white hairs develop, but I hope this sort of helps! :-)
^ Yea, haha it would be very hard to tell about the white hairs because her withers are white lol.
I used to ride with a foam key under my saddle, but I stopped because I felt so far away from my horse, lol.
I'm going to see her on the weekend, I will try to get some pictures of how it sits on her back.
Maybe a softer pad might be better then? You might feel a little 'squisher' in the saddle which might help? I honestly don't know though, I'm just trying to throw ideas out there to help lol.
^ I was thinking that too, maybe a wedged one to help with the rocking issue.
It would definitly be cheaper than replacing my saddle!
For sure!! lol
From what you described, she's low withered and wide backed, do you know if the saddle you're using is a medium or wide tree?
Sounds like, with the rocking (I could be wrong), that the tree is too narrow and is pinching her. If you add padding that's only going to compound the problem, like putting thicker socks with already narrow shoes.
Is there anyone that has experience with saddle fitting that can look at the saddle on her and give you some advice. Sadly an improperly fitting saddle can cause many issues with a horse .
You have noticed the signs, which is great - now all you have to do is follow up :)
It might be a good idea to have an equine chiropractor out to see her anyways, if the saddle fits incorrectly, chances are it's thrown her back out too.
^ Thanks everyone for the suggestions. I know that it is a medium tree, and I think that you are right and she may need a wide tree. I am going to have my coach/barn owner take a look to see their opinions this weekend, and hopefully get some pictures to get some more opinions. :)
