Facebook users have lower overall grades than non-users, according to a survey of college students who also ironically said the social networking site does not interfere with studying.
That disconnect between perception and reality does not necessarily mean that Facebook leads to less studying and worse grades -- the grades association could be caused by something else. However, it does raise more questions about how students spend their time outside class on activities such as Facebook, part-time jobs and extracurricular activities.
"I'm just saying that there's some kind of relationship there, and there's many third variables that need to be studied," said Aryn Karpinski, an education researcher at Ohio State University.
All I ever use FB for is to stay connected, and for that matter find long lost friends. I post tons of pics for my family out west, but otherwise I tend not to have much to do with the apps. I like forums and boards much more.

I love my facebook. It doesnt interfere with my job at all and I still have time for my horses too. Hopefully when I start studying in a couple yrs time it wont interfere with that either (if it still exists). Im an obsessed Twitter as well.
I've got facebook & myspace I might check myspace once a month and it's been at least 3-4 since i've been on facebook might as well cancel my account lol
Maybe the uniting cause is personalities. Lazy asses who don't work for their grades thrive on the web and sites like FB. Diligent students do something else like sport excercises or meet their friends IRL ;-).
Except I've a Facebook and the average of my upper secondary school certificate was 8.33. The highest achievable grade is 10 and the lowest 4. Not that bad, I see ;-).
I had Facebook and Myspace in college (still do) and while I was on it a lot, it didn't interfere with my grades or my social life. It's definitely about the individual.
I love my Facebook and my MSN. The reason being is that I am born and raised Canadian from British Columbia, now living in Michigan, U.S.A and I can keep in touch with all my School Friends, Parents, Grandparents and rest of my family and friends on both of those tools.
I love that it is secure and only those I choose can see my account.
I go on facebook quite a bit, it helps me stay in touch with friends and such. We actually discuss homework sometimes too lol. I also use twitter because you can follow celebrities (like david archuleta haha).
I think facebook has nothing to do with grades. I think the stereotypical "geeks" who get good grades are just likely to use it. I didn't get it untill a few weeks ago, and I am most definately a "geek" who gets good grades
