Email to Potential New Coach... Too Much??
 
Coaches... If a potential client emailed you this, would you think it is too much, or would you appreciate the fact that they are trying to make it clear where they are in their abilities?

I am wondering if I overdid it, or if I am just being paranoid.

Hi ******,

I am currently looking into lessons barns for a possible transition. Although I love my current coach, it feels like the right time to put out feelers to find a new "home". However, shift work poses a potential problem, as two weeks of the month are an afternoon shift, requiring a mid-day lesson. (1 pm on Tuesdays has been the arrangement for the past two years, with two week night lessons, 6pm or later). Do you have any openings in your lesson program right now?


If so....

Right now, I would consider my skill level around the "novice" area. The past few years, any schooling show that I have entered has been in the Novice division, as I use a school horse. Currently in lessons, fences are about 2'6", and are confidently jumped. In a few clinics, I have jumped slightly higher by being pushed. Spurs are able to be used without poking a horse over jumps and on landing. Pelham can be used well, and off of the snaffle rein, not the curb. I do have some troubles switching my crop to my left hand and using it when needed, as a result of grooming/jogging Standardbreds. When I make a mistake riding, I can normally pick out what it was, and can figure out how to fix it. Not always able to get a horse on the bit, but understand the mechanics behind it, and work hard at getting the horse in front of my leg and using their hind end.

I would consider my main riding goal to continue to improve as a rider and a horsewoman , while maintaining the fun part of it. My favourite people to take lessons with are the ones that are able to laugh at their mistakes, but still be slightly perfectionists about their riding. I enjoy the mix of group lessons with my 1x a month private, as I get to watch other people to help with the learning process, as well as being able to have the chance to just focus on my own riding. Showing is not an important thing to me, although I do enjoy the opportunity of seeing where I stand among other riders of an equal level. Fall fairs and schooling shows are in the right budget for me, but would love to do a Fox Run (non Trillium) show again. I also enjoy riding in clinics (or auditing) when the chance presents itself, as it is another way to learn, and take things away to use in my own riding.

If it would fit into your schedule, I am available next week in the evenings for a trial lesson, or the following week for a midday trial lesson.

Well, I'm not a trainer but I do think it's a bit wordy and you are going into too much detail for a first email. I'd cut it to just the first paragraph and save the next for an in person (or phone) conversation. Just my 2 cents :)

I'm not a coach, I'm interested in the topic and I couldn't make it through that e-mail. Taffy Clayton's version is MUCH more likely to get you a response.

My reaction to reading as far as I did was, High Maintenance, Lacks Confidence, More trouble than they're worth. If I were any kind of good coach, I'd either ignore the e-mail or tell you I had no openings.

^^^ My thoughts exactly! Kind of like a resume, short and sweet.
Also you want to tell her personally about your goals, so you can see if she is interested in you.
I once had an instructor tell me, she didn't want any students that didn't actively show in the big shows, because it didn't benefit her if they didn't.
That is someone only out for herself, not her students.

LOL! Just last year I talked to a Western Pleasure trainer about taking my stallion to break and get showing. We were doing fine until I asked her if she had a string of lesson horses, and she said, "I train horses not people. Once you know how to ride, you know how to ride whether it's English, Western or Saddleseat.". I said, "Thank you for your time. " and walked away.

I find it hilarious when people email me with a detailed description of every riding blunder they've ever made.
For me it's either I have time or I don't. I don't care honestly if you ride on your head while facing backwards.

Short and sweet - I'm looking for a coach, is there a time we can meet and I can audit a lesson? Is all that's needed.

Agree with others. Short and sweet. A good trainer will back you up a few steps anyway the first few lessons to find the holes in your current training, so your past isn't a big factor in the equation. I would just add a sentence that you are currently schooling novice so she knows what level you are riding at.

I'm not in the horse business, but I have spent 35 years in the corporate world reading tons on resumes and performing interviews. Although your email may be a little wordy, I think what's important to you comes through. Personally, I would not have a problem investing five minutes of my time to read what you took the time to think about and write.

What im confused by is why you are typing out an email?? I find that really strange. Why wouldn't you call them or better yet go meet them in person. You need to watch this person teach and possibly meet some of the students. You cant assume that whoever it is you're sending this to actually knows how to teach. You need to see them as a rider.
