Am I too big for my horse

My dad just got two Tennessee walkers from one of his friends who could no longer care for them and I am worried that I am too big for them. They are both about 15 hands. I am 5'6 and weigh 220 lbs (goal is to be 175). I would eventually like to jump when I reach around 180, would I be able to or would my weight hurt them.

Id say youre not too big- 15 hands is a good size for a horse and thats what the walker is built to do. ;-) just make sure youve got a proper fit saddle and it should be fine but if you notice them hollowing out their back its best to hop off.

My dh is around 250 and he rides our 14hand walker around for a short little while but she never strains or hollows her back-- to be truthful she could probably cary him around all day fine-- we play around and switch horses on trailrides and she is just as peppy and happy as with me, lol.

How old are the horses? I don't think you look too big, but I'd be careful to listen very intently to the horse's behavior and see if there's any sign you're hurting him. They look a little dainty, but I don't think you should have a problem if they're totally sound and not very young/old.

I don't know anything about jumping, so I can't advise there, and if the more experienced users disagree with me, I'd listen to them because I am no expert :)

Both are about 6, the previous rider was a 200+ man who rode western, I'm going for English. I'm not thinking about jumping at this point, I am still getting used to them and them me. I think I'm going to do ground work until I lose 30 or so pounds.

Thank you :)

Some more info.

I rode her for a few minutes when we first got her but the saddle from the previous owner was a poor fit, besides for the saddle she seemed to do well. I now have a english saddle that fits her perfectly.

It's awesome that you care about them so much :) I wouldn't wait, though!! I'm a big rider myself — significantly heavier than you — and I put off riding for a very long time because I thought I was too big. If your weight is all that's holding you back, I really think you should give it a go. Even if you only walk, it'll feel great, and you may (most likely will) find that your horse is just fine under you and want to do more!

I dont think your too big for them at all! They need some more weight and muscling I think but I believe you would be just fine for them.

Congrats to you and your dad on the new horses! :-)

You dont have to wait. Your not that heavy at all. There are guys that are taller and weigh more than you that ride without a problem. If you want to wait and feel more comfortable loosing some weight first then do so but honestly I think you look fine and the horse will be able to carry you along without any hesitation. Its all up to you and what you are comfortable with however.

Thank you all. I am so glad I found this forum. You guys are right, I am just nervous about being too heavy because my mom keeps telling me I am. But I am going to hop on the saddle later today and see how they do.

Well its good you care. As for losing weight, some exercise is better than no exercise. Just dont go too nuts! ;)
