Okay so my Fjord/Arab gelding has had a problem with his left front hoof for a year or two now. HE always seems to have a little crack in it. Our farrier trims it and tries to get the crack out but it keeps coming back. This time he tried something differant though. He trimmed the crack out, making a V shape where the crack was. That didn't bother me because he had done it before. This time though he did it deeper. Plus after he sealed it by using a blowtorch. He heated up a piece of metal and when that was slow he actually blew on the hoof with the blow torch. I'm wondering what you all think of this? Was it the right thing to do?
If you need pictures i can try and get some.
I'm not sure if its the right thing, but I have had a farrier do it. I had the same problem with a TB years ago. She had a small crack that wouldn't go away. Not enough to affect her performance, just an aesthetics thing.
He didn't trim any away, just cauterized the crack from the bottom with a hot tool and then hot shod her. (he traveled with a forge)
I sold her soon after that so I can't tell you if it did any good :?
I've never heard of "melting" the hoof before, but I suppose it was worth a shot. I think putting a "v" in the wall only adds to the pressure on the weak area. To demonstrate, hold your first two fingers together, hold them vertical to the table and push down. Now do the same thing, but with your fingers about 3/4 - 1 inch apart at the bottom. What happens? Personally, I think it works better to rasp the hoof wall (down vertically from the top) very short where the crack is and 1/2 inch on either side; blend in to the rest. Now the pressure is not pinpointed on that one spot. Maybe that will give the hoof a chance to regrow properly.
Thnx for the thoughts guys. Vidalco our farrier said he usually would have just cauterized the crack instead of trimming it around and doing what he did. But he doesn't have a movable forge. So he did cauterize it he jsut did it after he trimmed.
northernmama i think he did what your explaining if i'm understanding you correctly. I'll go out and take some pictures when i feed them tonite and put them up for you guys to see.
