Has a vet checked him out? Could be anything frm teeth to ulcers.

Might be worth it to ask the previous owners what their feeding regimine consisted of.

Hi,

How much hay does he get for starters? What condition is he in now - put on weight in the last month? Were feed changes sudden? Is he stressed or other probs?

I'd start out giving him more/free choice hay, keeping hard feed to little & often low carb/starch/grain feeds. Consider treating for ulcers & giving a probiotic. Ensuring his nutrition is well balanced.

This. Assuming no medical problems, if you want him to gain weight, give him all the high quality forage he'll eat.

Hi there,
I have a Clydesdale mare. She's 11 years old and 16.2hh. I ride her about 3-4 times a week, but nothing super vigorous because I'm not at that level yet. How much hay should she be eating? Especially now that the weather is getting colder.

2-2.5 % of her weight. If she is aproxximate of 1500 lbs (guessing by breed standards) she needs at least 30 lbs of forage a day. Best is free choice, or feeding them often enough that they never really run out of hay. You can up it to even 37 lbs a day to make sure she has plenty.

^2-3% of her *ideal* weight. If she's thin, feed more, if she's fat, stick to 2%. Horses need small amounts going through their system constantly & going hungry isn't good for them.

I would feed rice bran to your horse to help it gain weight, if as others have posted, the vet says he is healthy. I would feed him 1/3 a cup at each feeding. I feed it to all of mine everyday to help with digestion and it keeps them super-shiny.
