I ended up at a horse auction yesterday...
Yesterday, I went to a farmers market I sometimes go to. They sell fresh meats, eggs, homemade produce, maple syrup, fruits and veggies... Stuff is mostly locally grown. Beside the market, I have noticed a huge building with horse/ livestock trailers at the back last time I went. I drove by last time and noticed it was the Ontario livestock exchange building(OLEX). Yesterday, after my girl friend and I were done our shopping at the market, we were walking back to the car and I heard the auction was going. My friend is not a horsey person. I grabbed her by the arm and dragged her into the olex building.
It was all Mennonites attending the auction. A lot of tourists in the area stayed at the front gate and watched the auction from there. We walked in, I started looking at the horses for sale quickly in the pens and the sales " ring". The majority of the horses were Standardbreds. There was a few others.... Most horses seemed in good shape. I noticed a standardbred that was there and this horse was a copy cat of my father's standardbred that was sold a few years back ( a horse I would love to have back one day). I actually took a step back, looked at my friend and told her if it was her, I'm buying her right here, right now. It turned out, it was not..
I know a lot of kill buyers go to this auction. A lot of horses ending up at olex auction will end up in at slaughter... I am pro slaughter, but looking at all the horses selling for peanuts (between $300 and the most expensive one sold for $1500) left me with a very big heart... I walked out of there very sad.... I just can't get it out of my mind... I know it is happening, I know horses must be slaughtered, but seeing it first hand was very hard.... Heart wrenching...

I understand what you mean. I always look at the websites for a couple auctions here.. The horses go for nothing and some are quite nice. They could have been insane though, you never know!
Poor things, it's sad they never found their riders.
My horsey friend will sometimes buy from Olex. She has a cute paint gelding she picked up from there a few months ago. He is sweet on the ground but has some issues under saddle. They are working with him now and will one day make a great horse. It is sad knowing he could of gone to slaughter.
