I taught myself from watching youtube. I thought I could do it by book, but it was too confusing. YouTube has many different videos. If you are trying to learn a certain stitch and don't understand the video, look for another one.

I crochet, a really good book for learning how to crochet is Crochet-Opedia by Julie Oparka

I had a friend teach me how to crochet. I have found that in learning new stitches, it's far easier to look at a youtube video, so you can really see how it is done. The book illustrations aren't always the best. Something else to do, is see if there's a group, or club, that meets, and you can get some advice in person. The library is a great resource for finding out info. Good luck! I do both crochet and knitting, and can't decide which one I like more, but I find them both to be great fun, and you can make some cool gifts for family members.
