Hi there.
We have a few Appaloosa's and their colors are different and I am trying to get peoples opinions on the colors.
The first on is a 3yr old reg. Appaloosa mare. Her sire was Dun and her dam was a sorrel. On her papers they say she is a dun.
The second is a Quarter horse Appaloosa cross. She dam is a sorrel QH and her sire is a Palomino Appy. Over the last 2 months she has started getting webbing on her legs and face as well as a dorsal stripe.

The first one appears palomino, but this isn't a possibility unless one of the parents carried the cream gene. It's possible the sire was actually a buckskin dun instead of a bay dun, which would give a cream gene, but that's purely speculation since we have no photos of him! Assuming there really isn't any cream present, I'd guess flaxen chestnut with varnish.

The second appears to be regular chestnut/sorrel (with some appy spotting). Any primitive marks are likely just foal camouflage, since neither parent carries the dun gene, and the coat color isn't right for a red dun, anyway.
