Breakable's Art Journal
I'll be using this thread to keep everyone updated with my latest artwork and also hold myself accountable for what i'm doing so I don't quit halfway through like I tend to do.

So how I tend to work is I make a sketch, them some pretty sloppy lineart and color underneath that. I work towards realism and my lines are usually deleted at the end, thus they don't need to be pretty. When I first start I block in pretty basic places of highlighting and shading. After that I create another layer and refine things.

This is a silver bay i'm working on and it's still in the pretty early stages.

I draw a variety of animals, all of which you can find here:

As I am always looking to grow as an artist I also welcome critique, don't worry about offending me, i've got my big girl panties on, I can take it. Of course I'm not looking fr "OMG your art sucks, yuck!" but anything that is helpful is welcome.

its very nice. I like that the horse has real weight going down into it's front right leg and a bit of a "strained" look on it's face. that , becuase it is exerting energy.

one very small, and personal feeling, ; the tail is too large. the dock is not that long and it is drawing too much attention from the lovely shoulder/neck and head. That is MY opinion. not an error, but just something that bothers me a little.

I see what you're saying, I get a little out of hand when I draw manes and tails. Looking objectively it is a bit too long.

BreakableRider 08-28-2013 11:32 PM

I've worked on it a bit more, i've started going into detail on the heck, neck and shoulders and I've also shortened the tail. I'm thinking of shortening it a bit more perhaps?

when you put in the eye, it's gonna pop! very nice work!

one thing (there's always one thing, right?)
your light source is a bit confusing. When I look at the front part of the hrose (which is exceptionally well done btw) the light appears to be coming from the horse's left side , of to the righ hand upper part of the page. It flows over the horse's left front fore leg nicely, his nose and forehead , and onto his foreleg on the right. But, on his hind quarters, suddenly the light appears to be coming from the upper left, lighting the haunch and shadowing the left leg under the body. I you darken that right hind haunch and get the lighting more congruent, it will help.

My goodness I couldn't type earlier.

Thank you for your continued critique. I'm having a bit of a hard time seeing where you are coming from however, might be a bit of blindness towards my own work? Or seeing it in my own eye as a finished product.

On the haunches I am seeing the light from the top right. I haven't shaded much over there of course as it was very roughly done and not very saturated as I do on my first layer of shading.

I see what you're saying on the hind leg furthest from the viewer, I actually haven't touched it. Any shading or highlighting you see there is just spill over from another part of the body.... I am terrible at forgetting to do anything limbs further from the camera until everything else is finished.

By all means, if I just have blindness towards my own work let me know. I appreciate your critique and i'm not trying to brush it off at all, I am just not personally seeing how my light source is changing.

Can't go into detail noa on my iPad but its like too much of the rt rear leg is in sun. However, this is really minor , and creating light shadows out of your head vs seeing it in life must be very challenging

Ok I roughly blocked in more shading on the back legs and I worked on the hindquarters, side, added the eye and worked on the mane a little.

I think the shading is starting to look better as far as being from one source.
