im going to breed my filly in a few years and i was wondering what patturn of paint should the stud be? she is breeding stock(solid)

A homozygous stallion of the pattern type you like would most likely give you the results you want. If the stallion in not homozygous, still look for one with the pattern you like, but then her pattern genetics will play into the equation - even if she doesn't show color, she carries genes for a particular pattern.

Is this a different mare than the one you said you would never breed in your age thread?

Well I still don't know if I want to breed her or not. But I'll have to talk to her previous owner about what is in her genes.

I'd breed for conformation, temperament, & athletic ability - color would be one of my lesser concerns.

:? Yeh same

I am a breeder of paint horses and colored horses and it always drives me crazy to hear people say that!!! There is NO REASON why you can't breed for color and have all the other things too! All you have to do is decide what you want, be it a paint, palomino, buckskin or whatnot. Once you find the color or type pattern you want, you then check out the stallion for conformation, personality, athleticism, pedigree etc. If he doesn't have it all, don't breed to him and keep looking.

For example, go to a website such as, etc. put in the color you want, put in stallion, then keep researching from there.

Now, I would not breed to a stallion based solely on color, but there is no reason why color should not be part of the criteria.

Conformation, temperament, athletic ability, record of acheivement, and a breed either matching or identical to your mare all need to come WAY above colour.
Not just for the stallion, but assess your mare too@ is she high enough quality to ensure her baby is going to have a worthwhile role in the world and will get a home? The exception should be if you can guaruntee the foal a home for life.

There are five 'paint' patterns you could look for: tobiano, frame, sabino, splash and rabicano.

With all of them except tobiano, there is a very high chance the pattern will express so minimally you may not even get a 'painted' horse.
Frame and Splash can cause blue eyes. Some people like them and some don't.

GET YOUR MARE TESTED FOR FRAME. Just because she looks solid doesn't mean she couldn't have it. If your mare is heterozygous for frame, breeding her to a stallion who is also heterozygous for frame has a 25% chance of resulting in LWOS. All responsible breeders test their horses for frame if there is even the slightest chance they have it. Many owners of studs do not get them tested, so if you do not test your mare, you could be taking the chance that both carry frame. The best paint breeders (and therefore probably those with the best stallions) will always have had them tested for frame. Ask to see official test results, too, because people lie.
If you test, and know for sure your mare does not carry frame, then you may breed her to a stallion carrying it without risk. However, the foal from this has a 50% chance of becoming a carrier, meaning IT should never be bred with another carrier.
