tobiano or tovero????ss so many pics
my 2 yr old colt is reg tobiano with the apha,though i've been told i should try for a change to tovero.he is hypp nn,lwo nn,red factor Ee,agouti aa not sure if that makes any differance ...his sire is tobi,dam is overo

I see tobiano and overo patterns however there are others here that can better explain the whole genetics side of things as well as which overo patterns are involved. He's a gorgeous boy, I've always been a sucker for a blue-eyed horse, my boy has 'em to. What is his pedigree?

Definitely Tovero but more specifically he is tobiano, splash white & sabino. The splash would be your overo gene. Have you tested to see if hes homozygous for Tobiano?? My bet is he is
now thats interesting...i was told that because there was an overo parent he could not possibly be homozygous for tobiano.might have to do that test... i did test him for sabino1 and he was neg.....looking at his pedigree he has sorral,dun, grulla,buckskin on his dams side . he tested agouti aa and redfactor Ee....should i do a creamdilute or whatever it is test as well?
The sabino 1 and 2 tests are not real accurate yet. They are still working on them. But hes definitely sabino because that is what caused the roaning on the tobiano spots
I would venture a guess that the dam is frame plus tobiano. Her high whites on the legs with jagged edges is very much a Tobiano Trait.
Now I cant say 100 percent from seeing him but if he was mine I would test him for homozygous for Tobiano
I see no reason to test for cream at all. For him to have cream one parent has to have it to pass it on. It cannot skip generations and neither parent looks to be carrying cream although it can be hard to see on a black horse.

The Agouti gene controls the distribution of black pigment. This pigment can be either uniformly distributed or distributed to "points" of the body (ear rims, lower legs, mane, tail). Agouti has been linked to a deletion of 11 nucleotides in the agouti gene. The 11 nucleotide deletion of this gene is the recessive form of the gene. Only when the agouti gene is homozygous for the deletion (aa) is the black pigment evenly distributed. Heterozygous (Aa) or homozygous for the absence of the 11 nucleotide deletion (AA) results in point distribution of black pigment. Agouti has no effect on homozygous positive red factor (ee) horses for there has to be black pigment present for agouti to have an effect.
Why test for Agouti?
There are several reasons an individual might want to test their horse for Agouti. Agouti is not shown physically on red (ee) horses. Therefore, a breeder might want to test a chestnut base horse to see if it is an Agouti carrier. Testing bay horses might be desired to see whether the horse carries one (Aa) or two (AA) copies of the Agouti allele. A homozygous Agouti (AA) horse will always pass Agouti to its offspring whereas a heterozygous (Aa) horse will have a 50% chance of passing on the gene. Another reason to test for Agouti might be if there is some doubt whether a black horse is truly black or a very dark bay. The effects of other genes might also make it hard to tell if Agouti is present or not. This test does not determine if a horse is homozygous for black factor. To determine black homozygosity, a breeder should test for Red Factor. See the Red Factor page for more info.
