Just wanted to show off our latest arrival. She is out of my Holstein cow, Dainty, who was given to me when the dairy section of the farm was sold.
Just prior to the sale, Dainty had been extremely ill after miscarrying triplets. It's pretty rare for them to go full term and produce three live calves that go on to thrive (I've had it happen twice in twenty years and thousands of calvings). She had such a will to live that we just couldn't put her down and, once she was strong enough, the boss let me put her out with the pregnant dry cows and stock bull.
The day of the on-farm dairy herd dispersal came and I was so worried about Dainty. Who would buy her? She was both empty and dry. The vet said he doubted she would ever get in calf again and would probably be minus two quarters anyway. She was destined for the butcher's window.
I waited for Dainty to come through the auction ring but she didn't show. Then the boss approached me with her pedigree certificate and said "She's yours!".
Turns out she wasn't infertile after all, and her udder is in perfect working order. Happy days!!
Ain't she cute!
Congratulations to Daisy for her new calf, and congratulations to you too for being her proud new owner.:D
How generous of your boss, and how kind of you to give Dainty a second chance. She's absolutely beautiful and her calf is adorable! Dainty obviously has the will to live...and thrive!
What a beautiful, healthy calf and momma!
Endiku, yes, I work for a great family. This isn't the first bovine gift they've given me:
First came this one:
She was born very premature. Unable to even stand to reach her dam's udder, I brought her home and strawed up the kitchen!
Then came this one:
Again, premature. After the last one, OH made me keep this one in the garden shed instead!
The terrible twosome in their dog coats:
This is them today:
My boss says that these two heifers and Dainty wouldn't even be here if I hadn't taken the time to care so much, so he doesn't see it as a business loss (plus he's a big softie at heart!)
I love cows ._. They're sooo cute! Congrats, and it was so sweet of you to give Dainty a second chance <3
I am glad you were able to take in all of those beautiful Bovines!
