Before & After pics of "Tuff" - rescued orphaned foal.
It's been a while since I've been on here, but I thought I would drop in with an update on the orphaned foal that I rescued. Just to remind everyone here of his story - his mother was killed by coyotes while she was trying to defend/protect him. The owner got there just in time to save the foal, but not in enough time to help the mother who had been literally chased through a fence. Not knowing how to care for an orphaned foal - the owner simply put this one week old foal directly on pelleted feed. After a week or so went by and the foal's condition was rapidly deteriorating - he contacted me out of desperation to help save the foal that he obviously had no clue on how to raise. I told him to bring the baby to me, and I'd give him a forever loving home.

Here's the little guy I came to know as "Tuff" the day he arrived at my place back in September:

A week or so after his initial arrival - we were still showering him with love and affection:

And now here he is a few months later as a 7 month-old after many long, sleepless nights, endless love, many visits from the vet, and a proper feeding/worming regime:

Thanks for letting me post pics :) It's just been one crazy rollercoaster ride with this one :)

It's scary that someone breeding or who owns pregnant mares wouldn't know better as far as care of a foal that young.

HE IS SO CUTE! He's a lucky little guy to have found ya'll.

I agree completely!!! I don't think you should EVER breed any of your mares if you are not prepared or knowledgeable enough to care for an unexpected orphan should something happen to the dam. And to immediately put the orphan on grain at that age??? When he arrived at our home he had scours, he was severely dehydrated, scarily skinny and on the brink of death. I couldn't believe he actually survived the ride in the trailer out to our place.

Tuff and I have become quite bonded throughout this ordeal though, and I'm just thrilled to see him running, playing and simply growing up. It almost brings a tear to my eye when I watch him run, because there were certainly enough times in the past when I prayed he'd get through "just another hour" and then "Just another day" and then "Just another week" until I began to see some light at the end of the tunnel :)

What an amazing story. Tuff is absolutely gorgeous and looking so well. You've done very well looking after him... and you're right, people should be experienced if they're going to breed.

Wonderful story and a perfect name for him! He has great colors and I'm anxious to see what he looks like when grown up some more. Anyone can see that special bond you 2 have. Great job & keep showing us those pics!
