What are some things I can do while my horse is on stall rest?
My mare is extremely curious and easily bored. She has the personality of a foal. She's going to have to go on stall rest for 30 days pretty soon, and I know she's going to be bored out of her mind. What are some things I can do to keep her occupied?
Cones, hanging toys with treats, jolly balls, mineral blocks, and other things that encourage her to play and explore I think would be good. :]
I also keep a radio on in the barn, it tends to make them feel less lonely/anxious.
Hope that helps.
My friend's horse had a dangerous allergic reaction towards some vaccinations and had to be put on stall rest that lasted for weeks. Since she couldn't do anything with her horse she decided to teach her to do tricks. By the end the horse could smile, nod her head yes, shake her head no, and count to three haha.
Just curious why is she going on stall rest?
Thanks for the ideas! They're great.
CJ: She's getting tendons cut in her hind legs for a stifle problem.
Depending on her ability to move around, I would take her on small walks, and hand graze her when you have the time. It's nice to get out in the fresh air and eat some grass. =]
I like the idea of teaching her tricks. Maybe I'll do that with my horse, just because. o_O Lol. And definitely find her a toy she enjoys, or those hangy treats. You can also put big softball-sized rocks in her grain bin, so it takes up more time to eat her grain. If it takes her an extra ten minutes to eat around the rock, that's ten minutes of time she won't be bored and restless. I hope her surgery or whatever it is they're doing goes great, and she recovers splendidly. =]
A buddy within touching distance is a huge help. We have a sheltered pen outside that can be used for stall rest. The horse can touch a buddy over the pen gate and yet not move.
If they have to be confined in a stall, we switch off horses to stay in the next stall.
Oh, I wanted to add there have been many studies that show a radio left on contributes to ulcers, especially in TB's.
These are great: Uncle Jimmy's Hanging Balls.
You could give her one of those Likit things. Norman loves those. Big salt blocks are good, too. I'd go visit her a lot as well, and take her for walks and hand grazing. Just basically spend a lot of time with her so she's not as bored or lonely.
