I have been out of showing for a few years and even before I didn't show western very competitively. In the past my competition (myself also) always performed a nice controlled horsemanship pivot, but we were asked for a 360 degree turn at a very competitive open show this weekend and half the class did almost reining spins. Am I missing something?

I've noticed that a lot of horsemanship classes have more and more spinners in them. I think it just grabs the judges attention more...but personally I would rather be slower and correct, then push the horse and get sloppy.
Just make sure the pattern flows consistantly. Keep it all going the same speed.

i would rather see a pivot done right than done fast and rushed! just practice hard and forget about speed. The judge will appreciate a clean pivot rather than i rushed one IMO...i could be wrong.

Thanks for the replies! I agree the fast turns can look rushed and sloppy. My horse can pivot fairly quickly, but I always thought controlled speed was better. I let the competition get to me and didn't ride my pattern the way I should have. I tend to second guess myself, especially when I'm one of only a few without a trainer there...it was an open show for Pete's sake:)

At the AQHA shows there have been a lot more people doing fast horsemanship pivots. When I show I make sure I start my pivot off and make sure my horse is going to do it correctly then I ask for more speed. My horse spins pretty fast but I always make sure that he is going to do it correctly before I ask for more speed. You want your horse to hold its pivot foot. That is more important than how fast the turn is.

Thanks for the reply. I think all the "spinners" showed AQHA. I wonder if other breeds are going to that too...?
