Getting a horse to come when called
My horse has never been one to meet me at the gate. He typically just waits for me to come get him. But he has recently been moved to a lower pasture at my boarding barn. This pasture is muddy pretty much all the time. It seems to hold rain water for like a week and I am getting tired of having to tromp through the mud. How do you train a horse to meet you at the gate? I have tried bringing his grain with me and shaking the bucket but he still just goes about his business and waits for me to come and get him. I need another tactic. Any Suggestions?
Does he have a favorite treat (other than grain)? If you have time, you could work with him in a pen with a bell, or even just your voice. When you shake the bell (or call him) and he comes over, reward him lavishly and praise him to bits and pieces.
It's kinda the same with my horses x) Usually they all come running when I call them, but sometimes it's just like there thinking 'Oh, look. Theres that one human again. -sigh- I think I stay here...yeah. Feeling lazy. All that grazing makes me sleepy'
