Training the mane
I've been training Sandie's mane to lay on the right side, and so far it's worked pretty well, except for this one patch of hair in the middle that just wants to stick straight up! lol
I've been using training braids...I'll put them in for 2-3 days, them remove them, then put some more in after a few days without them, and so on. But that one section of hair still wants to be bad :-x
Anyone have any other methods for training a mane, besides braiding it?
If it's not to hot there, try wetting the mane, combing it to the side you want, then put on a neck rug.
Worked for my friends horse when his mane was growing back after being shaved. :D
I don't know if this is what trashcore was talking about but there is a product called the mane tamer. It is made of lycra or spandex or something that stretches over the head and neck and attaches around the girth. Do you pull or trim her mane? If so, you may also want to try letting it stay a little longer. That may help too.
I leave the braids in for week(s) at a time, and that works REALLY well....
You might have to let it grow out more to add some weight to the mane and see if you can force the roots to move to the side to where they should be. Not sure there is anything else that you can do other than that. When I put braids in for training, I leave them in as long as they will last and usually it's been closer to a week. I'm not sure that 2-3 days is long enough to actually train the mane to do anything.
I agree with letting the mane grow a little bit. Just be careful of doing any one thing too much, you may end up with less mane. Leaving a sleazy (mane tamer) on for too long can cause excessive hair loss of the mane. I had my gelding in a sleazy and a hood last winter to encourage him to drop his coat before the first show, but he ended up with a nice missing chunk of mane. If you leave bands or braids in too long you can also loose some hair. Both my horses have chunks of mane that settle on the opposite side. It is easily fixed for shows with a banding job and a sleazy overnight. Both of them have flat mane at the shows, but at home I tend to let it go and only mess with it for shows.
