I have a Halflinger who I have been showing in open show showmanship, for which I've been squaring, pivoting ect. like any other horse. However I wanted to enter her in a Driving show and the people there will actually know how a Halflinger is supposed to be shown for showmanship. I'm not really sure what the differences are and I have a few questions.
Am I required to have a whiter halter and whip or is that just for halter classes?
Do I have to stand her differently or is squaring her okay?
My aunt told me you move forward and back as the judge walks around rather than to either side of the horse. Is this true and if so how/when do you move?
That and any other tips would be appreciated.
There is no difference, we always did quarters (side to side) regardless of breed because the showmanship is judged on you, not the horse. We used white halters or leather halters, no whip.
Thought of a few more questions.
If I wanted to use a whip (and I do because my horse is a stinker) how am I supposed to hold it and what am I allowed to use it for?
Also my Halflinger is actually 15.2 so she'll be in the draft class not in with the ponies, does that make a difference?
And how should I do her mane and tail? I've seen draft rolls with rosettes, do you do that with a Halflinger?
I wouldn't recommend using a whip as a discipline tool, but I've seen them use it to help set the horse(tapping chest) and a cue to trot. I think it's in your left hand with the folded lead.
It makes no difference in draft horse or pony, they are usually shown the same, especially with a haflinger.
The mane roll is done the same as in a draft horse but if you can't do it well (takes a lot of practise) skip it and go for a tangle free mane and tail. If you do mane roll with rosettes and tail should be French braided with a bun and decoration around it.
I find its more excepted for a Haflinger to have a full mane and tail, down, than for other draft breeds, which usually have a pulled mane and docked tail, both braided.
