So I've noticed this recently. You know how you're supposed to record what you do before you start to be in pain or whatever, right? Yeah, well I finally noticed something. Everytime I ride, depending on if I changed my leg position as I did today, my legs hurt. It's not like a sharp pain, it's more of just a dull achey sort of thing. Kind of reminds me as growing pains, only in my ankles and shin area. The weird thing is, is that it's not only in both legs but it's only when I ride English. If I don't work hard it'll wait a few hours to kick in, and if I do it'll start the second I get off. But if I ride Western they don't hurt no matter how hard I ride. And sorry, but changing to Western riding all the time is just not an option for me.
I was just wondering if anyone else has this problem or maybe has an idea what I'm doing when riding English. ;/
Might be your stirrup length. What do you mean by change leg position?
I know that when I ride in my "show position" my legs ache and when I ride in my "lazy position" they don't. unless I'm schooling my boy for a show I ride sloppy, bad I know, but it happens. so maybe you are just riding correctly and just aren't used to it? try riding english straight for a few weeks to re-develop your seat and see if that helps, it does me.
Recently, it wasn't like this about a year ago, my legs have fallen in front of the stirrup. So we're trying pretty hard to fix that, and at the same time fix my feet which stick out a bit to the right. I have weird ankles and it actually hurts to push them in, but we're really getting there. Today I just moved my position back and, well, shoved my heel down. It felt funky and my legs ached a bit but I think I just need to get used to it.
Oh, and I tried to take a decently long soak in our hot tub last night and it did nothing to ease the pain. However, when I iced them a few hours ago I'm now totally pain free! But seriously? Do I need to ice my legs everytime I ride now?
I used to get that in my left ankle. Turns out I was locking my ankle and turning it in. I still do it sometimes and have to be very concious of making sure it's loose and turned out properly.
If it really recent and due to a "Change" then it is probably just using the muscle differently. I DO have to ice my ankle after every ride to keep from suffering from pain, but I had a really bad ankle injury.
what my chiropractor told me was "ALWAYS ice before heat". not sure why? but it works, I ice my sore, or will be sore, parts then sit in the bath tub or the hot tub, it helps a lot more thank just heat or just ice.
and from what it sounds like, it is just because you are changing the position you ride in, the more you ride, the more you'll get used to it, soon you won't feel any pain. its just like when you first rode a horse, like actually trotted on one for a bit, remember how sore you were? I sure do! I remember complaining to my mom how much my legs hurt.
My ankles and heels get sore every now and then too. Something else that is really fun to use is the horse liniment that you might already have for your horse. I have Absorbing liniment, which smells like spearmint and I rub it on sore muscles or joints sometimes and it works.
