Getting out of my own way
When I ride Western I have no fear, and actually have fun. But when I ride English I get too much in my head about it. So once I'm in my head I can't keep my balance and my riding is all over the place. It actually feels more like work. I want to learn to jump someday, so I don't want to give it up, I just want to learn to get out of my own head. It's so frustrating.
Don't think about it:) When you ride in your english saddle don't be thinking i need to do this i need to do that, omg this saddle is so small. I would just enjoy yourself, make sure your heel is down and just walk around and enjoy your horse. When i ride and im thinking about those things i get kinda messed up too. That's why when i ride i just think about how much of a good time im having, and how much i love my horse and my life:) eventually i just forget about it. I hope i helped, this is just what i do.
Why not take your horse in english tack on a nice trail? Something relaxing that you can really enjoy everything around you?
It's natural to feel a little more 'aware' in an English saddle, but it shouldn't interfere with your ability to relax and have fun
I had the same problem to for a while. What I did was use baling twine and tied it through the rings on the front of the saddle to have a gripping handle. Somehow just the thought of having something to hold on to made me a lot more comfy and relaxed. Another thing I did when I was little was take some of my mares mane and keep it in one of my hands so if I would slip I would have something to cling to and pull myself back on. I found I never once used those things but just the thoughts helped me. You'll get used to it and comfy in no time! :)
I agree with sky, go on a relaxing trail ride in your english tack..great idea! Or do some bareback work and then put your english saddle on. Get comfy by making it fun before you take it too seriously :)
