A mysterious something on his lips - a blister, wart or sarcoid?

Hello again,

My horse got this strange skin condition two months ago and it took a month to cure. Now, he developed it again. I don't know what it is and what to do. Previously, as it looked like a kind of blister which was full of pus - we decided to squeeze it because it was growing and growing... It was very painful for him. Then we sterilised the skin with Rivanol. It started to cure.

Today, it occured within a few hours with pus coming out. He was very sensitive and didn't want it to be touched. I am worried because it is the second time and maybe it is something dangerous?
I thought it could be an insect bite but now I am not sure. What do you think?
Should I continue to squezze it? Can it be a sarcoid?

Unfortunately I'm not sure what it is, but in my experience, sarcoids on their own don't contain any pus. They may be bloody while treated, they may scab up or fall off in large pieces, but after going through about a year of sarcoid treatment with my mare, I never saw something with pus, and certainly not enough pus to "pop."

Hopefully others will be more helpful in identifying what it might be.

Sorry this is slightly off-topic, but Erogran what are you using to treat your mare's sarcoids?

Original poster, sorry I have no idea what your horse has. If it was a one-time deal, I would say maybe an infected bug bite or a sliver of something in his lip. But I really don't know.

@TrailHorse- I used Aldara cream, which is an approach that vets at the University of Minnesota have developed and recommended. There is a lot online if you google "Aldara + University of Minnesota".

Here are a couple of threads I posted with the sarcoid "adventure":
This one was while I was deciding what treatment to use and getting started, and this one was showing progress as it healed.

The post-script to the story is that after all that treatment, it never went away completely (it's about a year later now). She still has a tiny little "pimple" in the same place, but it stayed the same size all year this year, so I've just left it alone. It never bothered her. Of course, it's in a place that doesn't interfere with tack, eating, riding, etc., so leaving it alone was an option for me that I know not everyone has.

Doesn't look like a wart to me. My house had them when he was much younger, right around 2 years old.

I Knew an appy who has troughs all his mouth and sheath. they would puss and bleed. They looked like cold sores/herpes (i know they where not) but i cant remember what they are called. The owner left it be because they where a chronic issue and the vets had no idea what to do.

I've never seen a sarcoid have pus in it, being that it does my first thought is your horse has a foreign body in the wound. Maybe a wood splinter.

I would have a vet take a look at it, or at least give one a call to discuss this with them. If it's in the same spot as the previous one, I'd definitely want it looked at. If it's in a different spot - I still wouldn't discount an insect bite - perhaps your horse has a habit of nosing around somewhere with some sort of biting insects. Who knows. But I'd get it looked at just to be sure.

Call the vet soon. It does not look like a sarcoid at all, IMO. Looks like he has pricked his muzzle on a briar, which has abcessed.

My guess is that he got bit or scratched against something and it got infected. Pus equals infection. I'd clean it really good with a mild antibacterial soap and apply an antibacterial oint (I personally love using coconut oil, it's antibacterial, antifungal, antimicrobial so pretty much covers everything :) As long as it's draining pus though try to keep the scabs open as much as you can so it can all drain out. :)
