Weight Loss?
Hey guys.

My ten year old paint gelding has become overweight. I've been boarding him at my grandpa's ranch (who is slightly old fashion when it comes to horse care), and he gets over fed for his size. The ranch is also along a public walkway, and he is constanly getting 'treats' from everyone who stops. I'm not a very experienced person in this kind of thing, and I'm just wondering, besides daily exersize what can I do to help him lose weight quickly and get him into shape for fall roundup.

If you've got any tips please let me know. :)

he is a wee bit chubby! a good way is to stand them in the stable for the day with a small feed, the weight drops right off!

could put a sign up asking not to feed him?

good luck x

S/he is actually not that bad. How long is the horse out to graze? What is s/he currently being fed and how often is s/he exercised?

i have a similar problem. my pony looks like shes in foal, and because i live in the city and can only ride her on the weekends, she is only getting fatter.

Joey is usually grazing a couple hours a day, but he's got access to it at all times. Right now he's being mostly cow hay, just for something to chew on. But you can add all the treats from passerbyes daily, and my grandpa's habit of over feeding.

He's excersized as often as possible. I work alot, so usually once every few days.

I've tried cutting back on his grazing, and I've tried to keep the amount he's getting low, and really started working him more often, but he doesn't seem to be loosing any.

Is he fed grain?

No, he's been off grain for a while now. He gets really hot from it, and gets really crazy.

 I don't know what the problem is..... He looks just fine to me, good condition. Don't know what the worry is

It may actually be a medical problem. I would personally draw blood to be sent for testing and in the mean time buy a grazing muzzle.

:? Or cut down the feed! Lunge when you don't have enough time to ride, lil things like that will help :P
