My horses are blessed with great pastures. My mare maintains weight perfectly. My gelding is OVERWEIGHT. I bought a grazing mask. Can I hear opinions. A friend of mine said to use it 8hours a day. I have had it on him a couple of times so far. He is dealing with it fine. I hope with riding, riding, riding, and the muzzle for consumption control, he will trim down a little. So far, the only con I have heard is that they can be rough on them and they don't hold up. I bought a best friend model. It seems pretty sturdy.

If they are turned out 24/7 you might start using the grazing muzzle during the day and taking it off at night. Traditionally horses consume less turned out at night is the reason it is recommended to use the muzzle during the day. If needed then you can switch to a lonfer muzzle wearing period.
Are you feeding anything else? I know it's probably old news but even though he is over weight he still needs the proper nutrients to avoid other issues. This is a good product if you are in need of something. IR Pellet

He is on hay and grass now. I haven't given him any grain as I thought it wouldn't help his weight issue. Today was the first day he was in his muzzle all day. He had it on from 7:30 to 5:30. He is frustrated with it, but he hasn't tried to rub it off and is able to graze. He does run a lot more now, but maybe that is a good thing also.

Can you tell me a little more about the pellets? Do they make a hot horse?

I'm curious to know if your horse did loose weight with his muzzle and how fast? I got one for my 15 year old gelding. He eats with it - but of course he is not happy! I'm wondering if it will be effective to turn him out with it every other night. During the day he is off pasture in a dry lot type area - w/ fans and such. I let him out around 7:00 PM and bring him in around 6:00 AM.
