Bump on her tail - should I worry?

While brushing out my mare, Magic, today, I discovered an odd lump on her tail. It doesn't seem to bother her any, even if I push on it, and it's a solid mass, not squishy or anything. I took some pictures on my cell phone... sorry if it's a little hard to see.

Does anyone have any idea what it might be? I've never noticed it before, but it may have still been there awhile, because I almost didn't notice it today. Does it seem like something the vet should look at?

You could always call and talk to the vet. See if he/she feels it's something worth looking at. Besides, calling is always free. =]

Normally, that'd be the first thing I do when I'm not sure... but our vet isn't in the office until Monday, and I don't think it quite warrants calling his private cell phone. ^_^; The other horse vet is usually in, but I won't deal with him unless it's an absolute emergency and ours can't be reached.

Makes sense. I think it's safe to wait until your normal vet is in, especially since he knows your horse already. I'm curious about what it is...

At first, I actually thought her tail was broken, and it was the bone jutting out, but that was mostly just a panicked reaction. o_o But it sorta reminds me of a wart... the way it's sorta flaky and looks like it pushed up from under her skin. But it's big, about two fingers across.

Yeah, I'd probably think that too. One never thinks rationally when something like that comes up. =] It sounds kind of icky, lol. I wish I had some experience but my mare's only tail problem is she has a bald spot, and the skin is super flaky. So I'm useless.
