Grooming my behind?! lol

After grooming my horse today, I bent over to grab her front hoof and pick it out...and I felt this gigantic pinch on my butt!! She had bitten my behind! Of course my initial reaction was shock, followed by a stern smack on the neck and a "No!" and she kinda looked at me like "what'd I do?!"

Now, you have to understand my mare to know my amazement...she is the LEAST mouthy horse I have ever known, has never tried to bite anyone, least of all me! If you stand in front of her with your chest against her head she just leans against you, and the most she'll do to your hand underneath her mouth is lick you! So you can imagine my surprise at the nicely pinched bruise that now resides on my derriere! lol

Later on, a friend told me that she learned in a clinic that after a grooming session, many horses will try to groom you back and that's probably what she was doing. If so, I feel bad for scolding her, but on the other hand, I don't need any more of those kind of "grooming sessions" from her!

What's the funniest bite-related story you have? :-)

MIEventer 06-01-2009 10:28 PM

Well, I don't have a "Funny" bite story - the bites I've recieved were from my toddler APHA who didn't know any better ..... but I have another ha ha sort of story that occured while grooming.

I was grooming my TB for a Pony Club lesson, I always groom with a curry comb in one hand, and then a finishing brush in the other - going over his body. He was a boy who never kicked, never did anything to make you scared to be around his back end area.

So when I got to his rump and finished up with his main body grooming, I turned around to face my grooming tool box *which was on his left side, near his hind end* bent over to get my hoof pick, when all of a sudden I turned from Super Groomer to Super Woman.

I flew and skid across the ground.

My TB decided to kick at something - I don't what it was, me? Fly? Pest biting him? *shrugs shoulders* but whatever it was, his hoof direcly hit my right butt cheek, causing me to end up eating dirt a meter away.

One minute I was bent over getting my hoof pick, next I had a hoof print on my (_!_) and dirt in my mouth.

Everyone laughed, and was suprised Cody did that, because - he never does things like that.

Eh, live and learn.

I never put my grooming tool box behind my horse anymore......lol

Hilarious MIEventer! haha Yes, I always look under my arm when I lean over to pick her hooves out now! It sure does teach you to expect the unexpected, doesn't it?! :-)

I've been bitten plenty of times, and the only one I can think of that could be funny was when I was helping a student mount at my old barn. I was standing on the offside to this horse and holding the stirrup so the saddle wouldn't move. This horse, Sasha? whipped her head around and bit me in the stomach. This was like, 7 years ago and I still have the scar. o_O

My horse likes to groom me too. She never uses her teeth, but she "massages" me with her lips all the time. In the two years I've had her, I've never, ever, felt her teeth, so I don't bother correcting anything. =]

And a goofy "grooming" experience I just had... My horse has been going in and out of heat since my friend brought her horse to live with mine, so like a month. Well the last few days she has been out of heat. I give her soaked grain because it's been so hot, so it gets her nose all sorts of nasty. I took a wet rag to wipe her nose off, and I was rubbing the towel across her nose and she starts squeeling. Like, in-heat kind of squeels. Because I rubbed her NOSE with a TOWEL?! It was hilarious, freaking funniest thing I've ever seen!

LOL!!! Sandie is TERRIBLE when she is in heat, she squeals and calls to everyone and everything in sight! Mare Magic has really helped, but it's still funny the way she acts when she's in season...but I've never had her react to anything I've done, esp. not wiping a nose lol! That's funny!

Vega always nuzzles my back/behind when I go to pick out her feet. She'll also nuzzle and pick up the soft brushes that I use and fling them.
She did nip me once or twice and I just put my arm/elbow so she'd hit into that, or try and and balance on one leg so she's hit into the bottom of my foot.

LOL, that's funny. Ah, I've had that happen numerous times...it hurts! :P Just gotta keep a watch on 'em, haha!

I've only being bitten once. but it wasn't that bad. i was riding along with wild_spot & her horse tried to bite the horse i was one 7 missed 7 got my finger/s. :P oh well these other stories are funny, but im sure it wasn't funny at the time.

Yup, the hoof-work and grooming thing I've had many times. But I wouldn't tolerate teeth either. Nuzzling is fine.

Funny bite story? Hmmm... not *really* funny, but I had to go a babysit my mom's horses once and one of them and I didn't get along. 'Course no one I know got along with that horse except my mom. Anyway, I was going in to the shelter for something or other and the dummy hauled off and bit me on the shoulder. I was so shocked! I just instinctly hauled off right back and whacked him high in the neck. I must have really shocked him because after that I never had a problem with him again for anything. Not that we became buddies or anything though...
