My dream has always been to work with horses. Iíve ruled out the idea of becoming a vet, because one, Iím terrified of shots and blood, and two; Iím not very good in the mathematical and science department. English is more my thing. I wouldnít mind operating/managing a boarding stable, or maybe a riding academy. Iím looking for a horsey job that doesnít require, like, a masters degree in anything (; Maybe a horse trainer or a riding instructor? Hm... I'd like to hear some feedback:-)
Iím a hard worker and I donít mind getting my hands dirty. Iím trustworthy and I would do anything for any horse. I also like to please (:
Not sure how long you've been around horses/riding for, but by the sounds of it, you have a few years on you. hah
I would recommend trying to get a job at as a trainer, or working with disabled kids, and teaching them to ride. like therapeutic riding i think its called. I've known of a few people who do it, and they LOVE it. or, you could get more in the faster lane, and exercise race horses, haha.
just some ideas. =)
Thanks, Jillyann! Ha ha, you're correct about the riding! I've been riding for approximately five years. This July will be my sixth (:
Thanks for the advice! I'll look into it.
Your welcome. Hope you find something you really enjoy!
i looked into being an equine vet myself, but 1) i couldnt deal with putting animals down, 2) every horse that needed a foster home would be at my house and 3) i dont work well with blood and shots.. hah
So im REALLY looking into becoming a Mounted Police Officer, its pretty common where i live, so fingers crossed. hah
Oh, good luck! (:
I'd probably have the same issue with the foster horses, he he!
I am also looking into opening my own boarding stable within the next 10 years (I want my kids to be older). Before then I am going to get my coaching certificate and possibly look into buying and training yearlings/two yr olds then reselling once they are green broke. Although I'm not sure about the market. I really want to train horses, and just do some coaching here and there.
Wow, that sounds fabulous! I'd LOVE to run a boarding stable. I support you all the way, he he! Do you know exactly how one would get a training liscence?
Well in Canada there's a program, and it's Canada wide, so if you get your coaching certificate in one province its good in all others.
You don't actually need a license to train or coach, as far as I believe. I mean there are some wack jobs out there claiming to be trainers, and they're just guys with anger issues and a business card. Have you ever trained horses, I mean for specific things. Like starting or behavior or whatever. I would expect you just advertise yourself and move up from there.
Definitely boarding stable or training. I would get in there as soon as possible. If you have a stable or barn near you start by mucking stalls and working horses. The trainer we have our horses with takes on people to clean and work horses for him. Unfortunately you have to start at the bottom in the horse industry ie training the horses no one else wants to ride and more stall cleaning.
You got to get your name out there and the sooner you start, the better. As a client of a trainer I could care less where you went to school. I look for experience and at the training program you use. Good luck in your future!
Good luck with your quest! Horsey jobs are becoming increasingly harder to come by.
Personally, I plan on going to med school to be a large animal vet. After that, I'll also become a farrier. After that? Opening my own barn. A bit ambitious? Very much so. But I'll make it happen. haha
