Possibly Buying A Belgian , Want info/insight on Belgian Breed
I am thinking of purchasing this 6 yr old Belgian Gelding, he was a rescue left in a pen full of mud..no feed he had worms and mud in his sheath and was infected..he had a lot of missing hair and once his current owners got him back in good health he had some training put into him for a hubby trail horse... though he hasn't been used much lately and will need a refresher ...I am just looking for any thoughts on this particular guy... and considering this will be my first full draft if anyone could tell me what to expect..pros..cons... etc..... he will be used for mainly trail riding....we have a lot of really great wide trails cleared out for trail riding..not much to have to bend over for LOL... he is approx. 17h
He is gorgeous & his condition looks great. I'm a HUGE fan of Belgians. If there is one thing I have learned, it's that Belgians are very forgiving.
I have a wonderful Belgian mare. She is strong, smart & calm. We have re-started her & she is doing great.
One thing I would suggest is reading Dr. Beth Valentine's book "Draft Horse Owners Manual". Drafts are prone to EPSM & need a very low starch/carb, high fat diet---in fact, the addition of fat in the form of oil on a daily basis is recommended. I have experimented with oil & have found that my mare does a lot better on the oil. Good luck! Belgians are wonderful horses!
Thank You so much for the reply JenniMay......I fell in love with him and his story ...he seems to have bounced back from his horrible past pretty well....a little stubborn lol but most drafties I've met can be at times....anyway I want to be as informed / prepared as I can be...though I'm sure a lot of it will have to just come from experiencing it first hand. I have owned a perchxqh however she took on more of the qh characteristics.. I am super excited...
Only con is getting back in the saddle on the trail. If your like me, height challenged, you have to plan for dismounting. Well dismounting isn't the problem remounting I need to be somewhere that I can stand on to get back on.
decided against this guy..he's just too green at this time for me...he gets too anxious on group trail rides..so back on the search for a draft...will be checking out a 15 yr old Clydesdale mare next... so hoping this one works out for me..
