So I know switching horses hadn't helped my confidence but I felt like I was just getting back into cantering and now the horse I'm riding I'm buying. When we canter I feel like I can't keep my heels down. I'm trying to do a bunch of things at once it feels like because you have to keep him collected otherwise he speeds up and run away. Is there something I can do to help with keeping my heels down? And stretches to help with your ankles hurting from keeping your heels down?

I've never had that problem because I do exercises every day;
Stand on the edge of a step with the ball of your feet, and slowly push down, then up on your toes, then down again, etc. etc.

About losing your footing, maybe your stirrups are too long? I had that problem not long ago, and shortening my stirrups really helped!

I'm no expert I'm just passing on knowledge :oops:

I think you need to relax your legs and let you thighs come down. Once you start tensing up your leg becomes shorter. You need to conciously think about having long legs.
