Clicker Training: Which brand/type of clicker do you use?
I want to start clicker training with a yearling and am wondering what other CT users use for a clicker. Which type/brand do you use? I've heard of ones with a whistle component that I'm interested in training a whistle call to be an emergency recall. Do you wear it on your wrist, finger strap, on your crop, etc.? Also, do most of you wear a fanny pack to hold the treats?
If you could suggest a brand/type that you like and ones that you don't like. Links appreciated!!
Any clicker is fine to use. Just pick up one at walmart. They are like a $1. Now let me tell you. I dont like clicker training because horses start to look for the treats way to much. Thats all they can think off is the treats. Thats why if I use treats, I have a bucket of some sort and put the treats in there. So they dont start looking for the treats from my hands. Also make sure to change up buckets so they dont start looking for that one bucket. They need to learn to wait and look to you for reward in the bucket.
I picked up one up and quit using it as I found it a nuisance. Instead I resorted to what I call "clucker" training. The horse caught on almost immediately. The sound is different than the click of asking the horse to move. I think the thing was in an out of pocket almost steadily as I didn't have a third arm.
Perhaps I should explain in more detail. The sound was made with my tongue, a bit like a chicken cluck. That freed up the hand that would hold the clicker. The horse learns to associate whatever sound you make will be followed by a treat.
I used a clicker with my dog for training. I picked up one with a clicker on each side at Tractor Supply for about $3.50. It's held up just fine and it's been through just about everything.
For the dogs I used super messy-smell-like-cat-poo treats. I used a treat bag for those because I couldn't handle the smell in my pockets. Right now, we've graduated off the clicker and I just keep some small treats in my pockets most of the time. The dogs randomly will get treats when they obey so that way they never know when they're coming or if I have them. I like the fact that it keeps them sharp cause they never know when that reward may come.
As for horses... I haven't tried it to any large extent with a clicker. I just use the word "YES" when they get it. Same concept. Different queue.
Good luck with your training!
