Sho-glo? Vita plus? More suggestions?
I've finally found a local feed store that has manna pro show-glo vitamin and mineral supplement which I have seen recommended by lots of people. I can also get farnam vita plus online. A few questions:
*which would you choose?
*would you still add free choice minerals? Or just salt?
*would you still add flax? Canola oil?
*anything else to add?
Horses will be on 24/7 pasture and I'm thinking a handful of pellets (maybe 1 lb day max) just really to carry the vit/min supplement (a pellet similar to the patriot line of adm).
2 relatively easy keeping horses, moderate work, pleasure, 3-4 times a week, one mare 6 yr, 1 gelding 9 yr, both paso fino crosses, gelding is about 1100lb, mare about 800 lb.
I feed Sho-glo since it is pelleted and my filly tends to dump her feed bucket if I stop watching her for even a second. This is meant to be an 'add on' supplement though, NOT a ration balancer or a grain. Do NOT feed up to a pound a day. Not only is this ultra-expensive (its only a 5lb bag!!!) it is way too much for your horse's system. It only needs to be fed at 1-2 ounces daily. I don't add flax or canola oil to my filly's feed, but I suppose you could add flax if you wanted to help with any sand or to brighten her coat.
Endiku OP said she was using a pound of pellets for a carrier not a pound of sho glo.
OH. Well that makes more sense...LOL. My bad, OP! I guess I need to go to bed. haha. I guess I read it as 'pellets' meaning sho glo pellets since they come in that form too.
Yes, a few handfuls of grass or alfalfa hay pellets should be just fine to mix the sho glo or vitaplus into. My filly is even willing to eat the sho glo by itself because it tastes good, but I've been told that it can stick to a horse's mouth and cause problems so your best bet is putting both pellets together and wetting it.
I give her up to 4 tbs of salt a day in her feed when its hot (I live in Texas and the humidity+heat is BRUTAL and she never drinks enough without it) and 2 tbs in the winter, but that's all.
The Sho Glo will cover it. More will just be a waste. I would still add the flax. It will help the skin which would be a good thing in your environment.
Thanks guys- it's brutal hot here too this time of year and the horses don't drink much (although it rains a lot too so some say they get it from the grass) so I've been trying to put out extra loose salt for them when I can- might just put a little in the food too...
