it's really not painful some horse don't like having there neck tugged on, if you do it correctly a horse wont mind it...my biggest pet peaves is some who cuts there horses main, to me it looks so unnatural, my horse abby will fall asleep when getting it done or get annoyed and untie her self and walk away... if you don't feel right about it i'm sure one of the barn kids would do it for a small fee

:o Not to worry it doesn't hurt! Also another way is to get a thining comb. My technique is get a small section of mane, brush the comb toward to neck of the horse (opposite way you usually brush a horses mane) keep doing that until you have some of the mane still left, wrap it around your finger and pull with some force. If you can't break it you have it too thick, it sounds like it hurts but none of my horses mind
somewhere i heard that if you do it right after they are worked out, their pores are open and the hair comes out easier... but none of my horses seem to mind it so...

sometime if the horse is sensitive i will rub liniment in to the roots and wait 30 minates. then pull the mane
