Does Anyone Know A Lot About Oldenburgs?
I'm trying to find out if Oldenburgs can come in dun colouring, because I've buckskin Oldenburgs, but Google is failing me. Do you know? I'm trying to figure out the breed of my red dun gelding, and his body type looks exactly like every other Oldenburg, but I thought he would have to be a cross to get his colouring.
Oldenburgs are normally black, bay, brown or grey.
The Oldenburg has barb, TB, hanoverian, cleveland bay, spanish, norman, Furioso, Anglo Arab etc blood so I don't see why other colours don't appear. The origin of the breed is also quite old ( 1600's ) which would lead to thinking that most colours are in there somewhere.
I have never heard of an oldenburg being buckskin, so I would guess that your horse is a cross of some type. Oldenburgs come in black, bay, grey, chestnut and sometimes pinto.
I just did a quick scan of my "library" for you, and I found one book that says that Oldenburgs are primarily bay, black, brown, or grey, but did not exclude any other color. Another book allows for all solid colors. As Nutty Saddler said, with a background so diverse it would not surprise me to see a buckskin or dun. Every horse breed has "recommended" colors, but that doesn't mean that other colored foals aren't born. There are (rarely) bay Lippizaners, and through my own Googling I have found red chestnut and even a grey Friesian.
Here's one buckskin Oldenburg pic I found: http://www.enavantstud.com/images/gold.jpg
