I was just curious to see what the base colour is of my gelding. He is a dark dapple grey, 4 years old (so will get lighter) and has black and red hairs throughout his body.
I was curious if his base is black or chestnut... because I am just not sure and would like to know. Although I am thinking a black based coat... what do yall think?
In some pictures you can see the redish tinge.
If you need better pictures, I can get more later.
First of all, he's very beautiful!
I'm thinking black base color as well, because of the dark mane and tail. I'm no expert, definitely, but that would be my guess. He could have grayed out from bay, if you think he's got a reddish tone to him (I don't see it in these pictures, but maybe that's just me).
He's gorgeous, but there is absolutely no way to tell what his base color was at this point without genetic testing. A few years ago, my guy didn't look so different from yours, reddish tinge included, and Dobe was a buckskin base coat.
As far as he is in the greying process the only way to know what his base color is is to pull hairs and send them in for testing. There is no reliable way to look at a grey horse and say "he is XX under the grey" as the grey can skew colors beyond recognition.
Some greys are just beautiful - he is a classic.
Pretty horse, but ugly barn...haha, I couldn't resist...you must have had a bad storm...
Grey tends to darken horses before it lightens them up so there is no way to tell without testing.
